Cabinet Surface Area Calculation Breakdown
Kitchen cabinets have complex surface geometry. Count and calculate in three distinct categories:
1. Doors (Both Sides): Average door is 1.5 ft × 2.5 ft = 3.75 sq ft × 2 sides = 7.5 sq ft per door.
2. Drawer Fronts: Average drawer front is 1.5 ft × 0.75 ft = 1.125 sq ft per drawer.
3. Face Frames & Island Ends: Add 25% of total door/drawer area to cover exterior frame rails, stiles, and finished side gables.
Worked Example: 24-Door, 12-Drawer Kitchen Refinish
Refinishing 24 shaker doors and 12 drawer fronts plus cabinet face frames with 1 coat shellac primer and 2 coats urethane enamel.
Order 1 gallon of bonding primer (e.g. Zinsser BIN or STIX) and 2 gallons of high-grade cabinet enamel (e.g. Benjamin Moore Command or Advance).
