How to Calculate Material Quantities for Flooring Projects
To calculate flooring materials: multiply room length by width to find net floor square footage, then multiply by the layout waste factor: 1.05 to 1.08 (5–8%) for simple rectangular rooms with straight plank layouts, 1.10 (10%) for standard multi-room installations with closets and doorways, and 1.15 (15%) for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with angled walls. Divide total square footage by box coverage to determine whole boxes needed.

Why Waste Factors Vary by Material and Installation Pattern
Flooring waste occurs from end-cuts against perimeter walls, trimming around door jambs and radiator pipes, defective or warped boards, and pattern matching.
Worked Example: Master Suite LVP Order (240 sq ft room + 40 sq ft walk-in closet)
Ordering luxury vinyl plank (22.5 sq ft per box) for a straight staggered layout.
Order 14 full boxes. The extra 7 sq ft provides spare planks for future board repairs.
Should you keep extra flooring boxes after finishing the job?
Yes! Always keep 1 unopened box stored flat in a closet for future water damage repairs or plumbing fixes.
