Calculates guardrail requirements for decks 30" or higher above grade under IRC Section R312 (min 36" height, 4" sphere baluster spacing), including 4x4 structural posts, top/bottom rails, balusters, and hardware.
Formula
Sections = Ceil(Linear Ft ÷ Section Length); Posts = Sections + 1; Balusters = Ceil(Linear Ft × 2.67)
1. Railing Sections = Ceil(Total Linear Ft ÷ Section Length (6 ft or 8 ft)) 2. Guardrail 4x4 Posts = Railing Sections + 1 (plus corner extras) 3. Baluster Count = Ceil(Total Linear Ft × 12 in ÷ 4.5 in spacing) = ~2.67 balusters/ft 4. Structural Post-to-Deck Hardware = 2 Hot-Dipped 1/2" Through-Bolts per post

Worked example
Installing 36" high composite railing around 3 exposed sides of a 20 ft × 16 ft deck.
Outcome: 52 ft ÷ 6 ft = 8.67 sections, rounding up to 9 six-foot railing kits. Requires 10 structural 4x4 railing posts with composite post sleeves. Total balusters: 139 balusters.
