Drywall Screw Calculator

Calculates code-required bugle-head drywall fasteners (1-1/4" coarse thread for wood studs; fine thread for steel studs) spaced 12" in field and 8" along tapered edges, including fastener counts and 1 lb / 5 lb / 25 lb box packaging.

Formula

Screws per Sheet = ~32 (for 4x8); Total Screws = Sheets × Screws/Sheet × (1 + Waste %); Boxes = Ceil(Total ÷ 1000)

1. Screws per Sheet: 4x8 = 32 screws; 4x10 = 40 screws; 4x12 = 48 screws 2. Base Screws = Sheet Count × Screws per Sheet 3. Total Screws with Waste = Ceil(Base Screws × (1 + Waste %)) 4. 5 lb Boxes (approx 1,000 screws per 5 lb box) = Ceil(Total Screws ÷ 1000) 5. 1 lb Boxes (approx 200 screws per 1 lb box) = Ceil(Total Screws ÷ 200)

Worked example

Fastening twenty 4x8 sheets with 1-1/4" coarse thread bugle head screws.

Outcome: 20 sheets × 32 screws/sheet = 640 screws. With 10% dropped/stripped screw allowance = 704 screws total. Order one 5 lb box (~1,000 count).

Why should coarse thread screws be used for wood framing and fine thread for steel studs?

Coarse thread screws have wide, deep threads designed to bite and grip into soft lumber fibers. Fine thread screws have dense threads that self-tap and grip into thin 20-to-25-gauge metal framing without stripping.
