Calculates residential central heat pump and ductless mini-split system sizing in tons (1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr) using Manual J architectural load estimation guidelines across US DOE Climate Zones 1 through 7.

Formula

Total BTU = Area × Climate BTU/Sq Ft × Insulation Factor; Tons = Ceil(Total BTU ÷ 12,000 to nearest 0.5 ton)

Worked example

Sizing an inverter heat pump for an 1,800 sq ft home.

Outcome: Total thermal load is 1,800 × 30 = 54,000 BTU/hr. Dividing by 12,000 BTU/ton equals 4.50 tons (or a 4.0 ton cold-climate variable-speed inverter system with auxiliary heat strips).

Why is oversizing a heat pump actually bad for home comfort?

An oversized traditional heat pump will satisfy the thermostat too quickly ("short-cycling"), turning off before it has run long enough to pull humidity out of the indoor air. This leaves the house feeling cold, clammy, and prone to indoor mold.
