Calculates heavy-duty non-woven landscape weed barrier fabric rolls, 6-inch seam overlap allowance, steel anchoring U-shaped staples (1 staple every 3 feet along seams and edges), and mulch/gravel pin requirements.

Rolls = Ceil((Area × (1 + Overlap %)) ÷ Roll Sq Ft); Staples = Ceil((Perimeter + Seams) ÷ 3)

Total Seam & Edge Linear Ft = (2 × Length) + (2 × Width) + ((Strips - 1) × Length) 6. Steel Ground Staples = Ceil(Total Seam Ft ÷ 3 ft staple spacing)

Worked example
Laying heavy-duty 4-ft commercial weed barrier with 6" seam overlaps and 6" metal U-pins.
Outcome: Net area is 600 sq ft. Adding 15% seam overlap equals 690 sq ft. Dividing by 400 sq ft per roll gives 1.73 rolls, rounding up to 2 full 100-ft rolls. Requires 3 parallel runs (2 internal seams). Ground staples: ~75 six-inch steel staples (one 100-pack).
Should I use woven or non-woven landscape fabric under mulch?
Use heavy-duty non-woven needle-punched fabric under mulch and flower beds because it allows excellent water and air permeability to plant roots while blocking weeds. Use heavy woven fabric under gravel driveways for high puncture resistance.
