Metal Roofing Calculator
Calculates steel/aluminum metal roofing panels (Standing Seam 16" width or Ag-Panel Corrugated 36" coverage), ridge cap trims, rake eave drip trims, and neoprene EPDM gasket screw quantities.
Formula
Panels = Ceil(Eave Length ÷ Panel Width) × Sides; Screws = Total Panels × (Rafter Length ÷ 2) × 4
1. Panel Width (ft): Ag-Panel = 3.0 ft; Standing Seam = 1.333 ft; 5V = 2.0 ft 2. Panels Per Side = Ceil(Eave Length ÷ Panel Width) 3. Total Panels = Panels Per Side × Sides 4. Net Area = Eave Length × Rafter Length × Sides 5. Fasteners = Exposed: 75 screws per square; Concealed: 50 clips per square
Inputs
- Roof Eave Length (Ridge span)
- Rafter Run Length (Eave to Ridge)
- Metal Roofing Profile
- Roof Sides to Cover
Worked example
Installing 36" wide exposed fastener corrugated metal panels on a 1,440 sq ft gable roof.
Outcome: Each side needs 40 ft ÷ 3 ft = 13.33 panels (14 panels per side = 28 panels total, each 18 ft long). Total area is 1,440 sq ft (14.4 squares). Screws: ~1,100 neoprene washer screws. Ridge cap: 40 linear ft (4 ten-foot pieces).
What is the main advantage of standing seam over exposed fastener metal roofs?
Standing seam panels have concealed clips underneath the interlocking ribs, allowing the metal to expand and contract freely in temperature swings without elongating screw holes, resulting in a 50+ year leak-free lifespan.
