Cubic Yards = (Area × (Depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × (1 + Compaction %); Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.15

Worked example
Laying 4 inches of screened topsoil over a 1,000 sq ft graded area prior to sod installation.
Outcome: Net volume is 333.3 cu ft (12.35 cubic yards). Adding 15% compaction equals 14.20 cubic yards (~16.3 tons of topsoil).
What is the difference between screened topsoil and garden blend?
Screened topsoil has rocks and roots sifted out through a 1/2" mesh and is ideal for lawn grading. Garden blend mixes 50% topsoil with 50% aged organic leaf/manure compost to deliver high nutrients for raised vegetable beds and flowers.
