Large Space Calculation: Multi-Room Planning for Carpet & Underlayment

Flooring must acclimate inside the climate-controlled installation room (65°F–75°F and 30%–50% relative humidity): Solid Hardwood requires 5 to 7 days (or until wood moisture is within 2% to 4% of the subfloor); Engineered Hardwood and Laminate require 48 to 72 hours; and Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) requires 48 hours to reach room equilibrium temperature. Cross-stack boxes in a log-cabin pattern with box ends open for proper airflow.

The Log-Cabin Cross-Stacking Protocol

Never lean flooring boxes vertically against walls. Stack boxes flat, maximum 3 to 4 boxes high, alternating horizontal directions (log-cabin style). Open the plastic wrap at box ends to allow ambient air to circulate evenly throughout the stack.

Worked Example: Moisture Meter Equilibrium Verification

Testing 3/4-inch solid red oak planks and 3/4-inch OSB subfloor prior to nail-down installation.

Testing with a digital moisture meter prevents disastrous summer floor cupping or winter plank gapping.

Does vinyl plank (LVP) really need to acclimate if it is waterproof plastic?

Yes! While vinyl does not absorb moisture, vinyl expands and contracts dramatically with temperature. Installing cold vinyl from an unheated delivery truck causes buckling when the room heats up.
