Calculates broadloom carpet requirements in square yards based on standard 12-foot and 15-foot wide master rolls, seam orientation, pad rolls, and perimeter tackless strips.
Formula
Sq Yards = (Room Area in Sq Ft ÷ 9) × (1 + Waste %); Pad = Ceil(Net Sq Ft ÷ 270 sq ft roll)
1. Net Area Sq Ft = Length × Width 2. Net Sq Yards = Net Area Sq Ft ÷ 9 3. Total Sq Yards with Waste = Net Sq Yards × (1 + Waste %) 4. Pad Rolls (30 sq yd / 270 sq ft each) = Ceil(Net Area Sq Ft ÷ 270) 5. Tack Strips (4 ft pieces) = Ceil((2 × (Length + Width)) ÷ 4)

Worked example
Installing 12-foot broadloom plush carpet over an 8-lb rebond cushion pad.
Outcome: Net room area is 221 sq ft (24.56 sq yards). Adding 12% broadloom roll waste gives 27.5 sq yards. Pad needed: 1 roll (30 sq yards). Tack strips: 15 four-foot pieces (60 lin ft).
Why does carpet have higher cut waste than tile or wood?
Broadloom carpet is produced in fixed 12-foot or 15-foot wide continuous rolls. If your room is 13 feet wide, a 12-foot roll requires a 1-foot cross seam, creating offcut scraps.
