Formula
Total Sq Ft = Length × Width × (1 + Waste %); Boxes = Ceil(Total Sq Ft ÷ Box Sq Ft)

Worked example
Installing vinyl plank flooring across a 252 sq ft room with cartons containing 22.5 sq ft each.
Outcome: Net floor area is 252 sq ft. Adding 10% waste (25.2 sq ft) equals 277.2 sq ft. Dividing by 22.5 sq ft/box gives 12.32 boxes, rounding up to 13 full boxes (292.5 total sq ft purchased).
Why is a 10% waste factor necessary for flooring?
During installation, planks must be cut to fit wall perimeters, door jambs, closets, and heating vents. Cuts shorter than 8-10 inches cannot be reused as starter rows, resulting in unavoidable cut-off scrap.
