Worked example
Painting a 224 sq ft smooth drywall ceiling with 2 coats of dead-flat white ceiling paint.
Outcome: Total ceiling area is 224 sq ft. Two coats require 448 sq ft of coverage. Dividing by 375 sq ft/gal with 10% waste gives 1.31 gallons. Recommendation: 2 single gallons (or 1 gallon plus 1 quart).
Can I use regular wall paint on my ceiling?
Ceiling paint is specifically formulated with zero sheen (dead flat) to prevent light reflection from highlighting drywall imperfections. It also has higher viscosity to minimize spatter.
