Countertop Square Footage Calculator

Calculates exact finished countertop square footage (standard 25.5" depth with 1.5" front overhang), jumbo quartz/granite stone slabs (typically 126" × 63" = 55.1 sq ft), edge fabrication linear footage, and undermount sink cutouts.

Formula

Sq Ft = (Linear Ft × 2.125 ft depth) + Island Sq Ft; Slabs = Ceil((Total Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ 55)

1. Standard Perimeter Counter Depth = 25.5 inches = 2.125 feet 2. Perimeter Counter Area = Linear Ft × 2.125 ft 3. Island Area = (Standard: 18 sq ft / Large: 32 sq ft / None: 0) 4. Total Net Countertop Area = Perimeter Area + Island Area 5. Total Area with Slab Waste = Total Net Area × (1 + Waste %) 6. Jumbo Stone Slabs (55 sq ft/slab) = Ceil(Total Area with Waste ÷ 55)

Inputs

  • Total Countertop Run Length
  • Include Kitchen Island?
  • Countertop Material

Worked example

Fabricating quartz countertops for 22 ft of perimeter cabinets plus an 18 sq ft island.

Outcome: Perimeter area is 22 × 2.125 = 46.75 sq ft. Island is 18.0 sq ft. Total net area is 64.75 sq ft. With 10% stone fabrication waste (71.2 sq ft), requires 2 jumbo slabs of quartz (110 sq ft total). Edge polishing: 28 linear feet.

Why does natural stone countertop pricing require buying full slabs?

Stone fabricators must purchase whole 55-to-60 sq ft slabs from the distributor. If your kitchen layout requires 62 square feet, the fabricator must purchase two full slabs, which can significantly influence the project quote.
