Calculates standard kitchen cabinet box requirements across base cabinets (34.5" H × 24" D), wall/upper cabinets (30" or 36" H × 12" D), corner lazy susans, sink bases, and filler strips for linear, L-shape, U-shape, or island layouts.

Formula

Linear Ft = Wall 1 + Wall 2 - Corner Deduction (3 ft); Base Boxes = Ceil(Linear Ft ÷ 2.5); Upper Boxes = Base Boxes - Appliance Voids

1. Net Linear Feet (L-Shape) = Wall 1 + Wall 2 - 3.0 ft (corner cabinet overlap deduction) 2. Net Linear Feet (U-Shape) = Wall 1 + 2 × Wall 2 - 6.0 ft (two corner deductions) 3. Net Linear Feet (Galley) = Wall 1 + Wall 2 4. Add Island Linear Feet (6 ft or 8 ft if selected) 5. Base Cabinet Boxes = Ceil(Total Linear Ft ÷ 2.5 ft average box width) 6. Wall/Upper Boxes = Ceil((Total Linear Ft - 5.5 ft for Range & Refrigerator) ÷ 2.5 ft) 7. Filler Strips (3-inch scribe fillers) = Number of Wall Terminations (2 to 4)

Worked example

Calculating base and upper cabinet box counts for a 14x10 L-shaped kitchen.

Outcome: Total linear feet is 14 + 10 - 3 (corner deduction) = 21 linear feet. Requires ~8 base cabinet boxes (including 1 corner lazy susan, 1 sink base, and drawer bases) and ~6 wall cabinet boxes. Estimated material cost: ~$4,620.

Why must you deduct 3 feet from linear wall dimensions in an L-shaped kitchen?

Because standard corner base cabinets (like a 36" Lazy Susan) occupy 36 inches (3 feet) of space along both intersecting walls. Subtracting 3 feet from the sum of both walls prevents double-counting the corner footprint.
