Paver Calculator

Complete hardscaping estimator calculating concrete interlocking paver counts, pallet counts, 4"–6" compacted gravel base tons, 1" bedding sand tons, and polymeric sand bags.

Formula

Pavers = Area × (Pavers/Sq Ft) × (1 + Waste %); Gravel Base Tons = (Area × (Depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × 1.4

1. Area = Length × Width 2. Pavers = Ceil(Area × (Pavers per Sq Ft) × (1 + Waste %)) 3. Gravel Base (Tons) = (Area × (Base Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × 1.4 tons/cu yd 4. Bedding Sand (Tons) = (Area × (1 in ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × 1.35 tons/cu yd 5. Polymeric Sand = Ceil(Area ÷ 75 sq ft per 50 lb bag) 6. Edge Restraint (Linear Ft) = 2 × (Length + Width)

Inputs

  • Patio / Walkway Length
  • Patio / Walkway Width
  • Paver Size Format
  • Compacted Gravel Base Depth

Worked example

Installing a 300 sq ft interlocking concrete paver patio over a 4" gravel base with polymeric sand.

Outcome: Area is 300 sq ft (330 sq ft with 10% waste = 881 pavers, or 3.3 pallets). Crushed gravel base (4"): ~5.2 tons. Bedding sand (1"): ~1.25 tons. Polymeric sand: 4 bags (50 lb). Edge restraint: 70 linear ft.

Why is polymeric sand better than regular sand for paver joints?

Polymeric sand contains specialized polymers that activate with water misting to form a flexible, durable binder. It locks pavers in place, resists weed growth, and prevents ants from excavating sand tunnels between joints.
