Shower Tile Calculator
Comprehensive shower enclosure estimator calculating vertical shower wall tile, sloped shower pan floor mosaic sheets, waterproof backer board / Kerdi membrane rolls, thinset mortar, and epoxy grout.
Formula
Wall Area = (Back Wall + 2 × Side Walls) × Height; Pan Area = Width × Depth
1. Wall Area = (Width + 2 × Depth) × Height 2. Pan Floor Area = Tile Pan ? (Width × Depth) : 0 3. Ceiling Area = Tile Ceiling ? (Width × Depth) : 0 4. Gross Wall Area = (Wall Area + Ceiling Area) × (1 + Waste %) 5. Gross Pan Area = Pan Area × (1 + 15% Waste) 6. Waterproofing Membrane = Total Wall Area + Pan Area + 15%
Inputs
- Shower Width (Back Wall)
- Shower Depth (Side Walls)
- Tile Height on Walls
- Tile the Shower Pan Floor?
- Tile the Shower Ceiling?
Worked example
Tiling walls (12x24 porcelain) and floor (2x2 mosaic sheets) with Schluter Kerdi waterproofing.
Outcome: Wall area is 88 sq ft (101.2 sq ft with 15% waste = 7 boxes of 12x24). Pan floor is 15 sq ft (18 sq ft with waste = 18 mosaic sheets). Waterproof membrane: 1 roll (108 sq ft Kerdi). Thinset: 3 bags (50 lb).
Why must shower floor tile be small mosaic pieces?
Shower pans slope 1/4" per foot toward the central drain in four directions. Small 2"x2" mosaic sheets conform to this compound bowl shape without tile cracking and provide high grout-joint traction under wet feet.
