Wall Tile Calculator
Calculates vertical wall tile requirements for accent walls, bathroom wainscoting, and utility rooms, including linear feet of Schluter Jolly edge profiles and cutout deductions.
Formula
Wall Area = Length × Height; Boxes = Ceil((Wall Area × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ Box Sq Ft)
1. Net Area = Wall Length × Tile Height 2. Gross Area = Net Area × (1 + Waste %) 3. Boxes = Ceil(Gross Area ÷ Box Coverage) 4. Edge Trim = Length of exposed vertical/horizontal tile perimeter
Inputs
- Wall Length / Width
- Tile Height on Wall
- Tile Length (Inches)
- Tile Width (Inches)
- Square Feet Per Box
Worked example
Tiling an 80 sq ft accent wall from floor to ceiling with 4x12 ceramic subway tiles in 10 sq ft boxes.
Outcome: Net area is 80 sq ft. Adding 10% waste equals 88 sq ft. Dividing by 10 sq ft/box gives 8.8 boxes, rounding up to 9 full boxes (90 total sq ft). Mastic adhesive: 2 gallons.
Can I use premixed tile mastic on walls?
Yes! Premixed organic tile adhesive (mastic) is ideal for dry interior wall applications and kitchen backsplashes because it offers high initial grab without sag. However, thinset mortar is required for wet shower areas and heavy large-format tiles.
