Calculates kitchen backsplash tile requirements across countertop runs (standard 18" splash height), cooktop tall splash zones (30"–36" height), electrical outlet cutouts, and edge trims.

Formula

Total Sq Ft = (Linear Ft × (Height ÷ 12)) + (Cooktop Extra Sq Ft); Sheets/Boxes = Ceil(Total Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %))

Worked example

Installing 3x6 white subway tile with 18" standard backsplash plus an 18" high section behind a 30" stove.

Outcome: Standard run is 24 sq ft. Cooktop accent adds 3.75 sq ft (27.75 net sq ft total). With 12% waste (31.08 sq ft effective), you need 3 boxes (12.5 sq ft/box) for a total of 37.5 sq ft purchased. Schluter Jolly trim: 2 eight-foot sticks.

Should I use unsanded or sanded grout for subway tile backsplashes?

For grout joints 1/8 inch or narrower (standard for subway tile and mosaics), use unsanded or all-in-one pre-mixed grout to prevent scratching delicate glazed or glass tile surfaces.
