Thinset Mortar Calculator

Calculates thinset mortar bag requirements (ANSI A118.4 / A118.15) based on trowel notch dimensions (1/4x1/4, 1/4x3/8, 1/2x1/2 square notch, or Euro slant notch for large format tiles).

Formula

Bags = Ceil((Area × (1 + Backbutter) × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ Trowel Yield)

Worked example

Installing 150 sq ft of porcelain floor tile with back-buttering and 1/2" square notch trowel.

Outcome: Effective area with back-buttering is 172.5 sq ft. Adding 10% waste equals 189.75 sq ft. Dividing by 45 sq ft per 50 lb bag gives 4.22 bags, rounding up to 5 full 50-lb bags.

What is back-buttering and why is it required for large tile?

Back-buttering is applying a thin flat skim coat of mortar to the back of each tile with the flat side of the trowel before placing it into the combed floor ridges. It guarantees 95%+ solid contact with zero air pockets.
