Worked example

L-shaped room with large format tile installed in a complex herringbone pattern.

Outcome: Calculated total waste factor is 7% base + 3% shape + 10% pattern + 3% size = 23% total waste. Net area of 200 sq ft requires 246 sq ft total (46 sq ft of waste/reserve).

What is attic stock and why should I keep extra tile?

Attic stock is 1 to 2 extra unopened boxes of tile and leftover dye-lot grout stored in your garage or attic. If a plumbing leak or accident damages 2 tiles five years later, you can replace them seamlessly without having to re-tile the entire room.
