How to Paint Over Oil-Based Paint with Water-Based Latex
You cannot apply water-based latex paint directly over glossy oil-based paint without surface preparation; the latex will peel off in large sheets within weeks. To convert oil to latex successfully: 1) Test the surface with denatured alcohol (oil paint will not soften), 2) Degloss by scuff-sanding with 120-grit sandpaper, 3) Apply one full coat of high-adhesion bonding primer (such as INSL-X Stix or Zinsser 1-2-3 Plus), and 4) Topcoat with two coats of quality acrylic latex or urethane enamel.

The 30-Second Rubbing Alcohol Adhesion Test
To determine if your existing trim is oil-based (alkyd) or water-based (latex):
1. Pour 91% isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol onto a clean cotton ball or rag.
2. Rub firmly back and forth across the painted surface for 15 seconds.
3. Result A: If paint rubs off onto the cotton, it is LATEX (safe to paint over directly).
4. Result B: If the paint does not soften or transfer at all, it is OIL-BASED (requires bonding primer conversion).
Worked Example: Converting 10 Vintage Interior Doors from Oil to Acrylic Enamel
Refinishing 10 six-panel wood doors currently coated in 1970s high-gloss oil enamel.
Purchase 2 gallons of bonding primer and 3 gallons of satin urethane enamel.
Can I use liquid deglosser instead of sanding?
Liquid deglosser (liquid sandpaper) chemically etches the surface and works well in detailed carved moldings where sandpaper cannot reach.
