The 5°F Dew Point Rule

Dew point is the temperature at which airborne water vapor condenses into liquid water droplets. If the siding surface temperature drops within 5°F of the dew point (common in late afternoon or evening), invisible microscopic condensation forms on the wall. Painting over this moisture ruins resin coalescence, causing paint to wash off in the next rain.

Substrate Moisture Testing: The 15% Rule

Wood siding and masonry must be tested with a digital pin-type moisture meter before applying primer or paint:

• Below 12%: Ideal for painting.

• 12% to 15%: Acceptable for breathable 100% acrylic latex.

• Above 15%: DO NOT PAINT. Allow 48–72 hours of dry sunny weather.
