Bookshelf Capacity Calculator

Calculates total book holding capacity across standard paperback (0.75" spine), hardcover (1.25" spine), and heavy reference/textbooks (2.0" spine), shelf weight loads (pounds per linear foot), and maximum span limits (the "Sagulator" formula) to prevent shelf bowing.

Total Books = (Shelf Width In × Shelves × (1 - Breathing %)) ÷ Avg Spine Width; Weight = Total Books × Lbs/Book

Worked example

Calculating book capacity and total shelf weight on a 36-inch 5-tier bookcase.

Outcome: Total shelf span is 180 linear inches (15 feet). With 15% decorative breathing space (153 usable inches), holds ~153 mixed books (~30 books per shelf). Total book weight: ~230 lbs (~46 lbs per shelf). 3/4" plywood easily carries 46 lbs on a 36" span with zero noticeable sag.

How can you prevent a wide bookshelf from sagging in the middle?

To stop bookshelf sag: 1) Glue and nail a 1.5-inch solid hardwood face trim strip along the front edge of each shelf (which increases stiffness by over 400%); 2) Add a center vertical divider support; or 3) Upgrade from particleboard to 3/4" Baltic birch plywood.
