Calculates linear footage of pantry shelving, vertical tier spacing (10" for canned goods, 14" for cereal boxes, 18" for small appliances/baskets), corner shelf intersections (L-wraps), wall cleats, and weight load capacity.

Linear Shelf Ft = (Wall 1 + Wall 2) × Shelf Tiers; Boards = Ceil((Linear Ft × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ 8)

1. Net Wall Run Length: Walk-In L = 10 ft; Reach-In = 4 ft; Walk-In U = 14 ft; Large L = 14 ft 2. Total Linear Footage = Wall Run Length × Shelf Tier Count 3. Total Linear Ft with Cut Waste = Total Linear Ft × (1 + Waste %) 4. 8-Foot Shelf Boards (3/4" × 12" or 16" deep) = Ceil(Total Linear Ft with Waste ÷ 8.0) 5. Wall Cleats (1x2 pine boards) = 2 × Total Linear Ft 6. Corner Support Posts / Gussets = Shelf Tier Count × Corner Count

Worked example

Building custom wood pantry shelves with 5 vertical tiers.

Outcome: Requires 50 net linear feet of shelving (5 tiers × 10 ft run). With 8% cut waste (54 linear feet), order 7 eight-foot melamine or primed wood shelf boards (12" deep), 10 eight-foot 1x2 pine wall cleats, and 5 corner support bracket assemblies.

What is the best shelf depth for a food pantry?

12 inches is the optimal depth for food pantries. If shelves are made 18 to 24 inches deep, smaller canned goods and spices inevitably get pushed to the back, forgotten, and expire.
