Total Area = Length × Width × (1 + Waste %); Boxes = Ceil(Total Area ÷ Box Coverage)

Worked example
Laying 12mm laminate flooring packed in 21.5 sq ft boxes with separate 3-in-1 underlayment.
Outcome: Net room area is 208 sq ft. Adding 10% waste equals 228.8 sq ft. Dividing by 21.5 sq ft/box gives 10.64 boxes, rounding up to 11 boxes (236.5 total sq ft). Underlayment: 3 rolls (100 sq ft each).
Why is expansion gap so critical for laminate?
Laminate has a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core that expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes. Without a 3/8" gap around walls, planks will pinch and buckle upwards.
